Which golf course should i play at Doral - The Gold Course or the Red Course?
I am going to be staying at the Marriott Doral Villas next week and I am wondering which is the better or recommended course of these two. Obviously the Blue Monster, Great White, and the Silver are superior to both...but for my budget i am looking at playing either the Red or the Gold Course.
I like the signature 18th island green on the Gold, but i read that the Red has two island greens itself. What is the local favorite? What is the best designed course as far as looks? This is my first time splurging on a championship course and i want to get the most for my first experience.
Thanks for your advice..
I've stayed at Doral twice for work conferences...oh, to be in Miami in the winter!
Between the Red and the Gold...play the Gold.
The red course...too many of the holes are jumbled together...it has that parkland muni feel to it. One or two decent holes and a lot of mediocrity.
The gold course...all but a couple holes bring water in to play but have fairly generous landing areas. Only one or two holes felt remotely tricked up...the carts all have GPS which helps a ton. If you can keep the ball in the fairway you can score.
The other thing I liked is that a huge chunk of holes on the Gold are far away from the main resort, so you don't have that feeling of being right on top of people.
The pro told me they tend to put a lot of outings and/or unfamiliar golfers on the Red (it has a lower slope than the Gold so the occasional/novice/clueless golfers tend to go there other than the rubes that want to play the Blue Monster and can't break 150 and take 6 1/2 hours doing so), and pace of play tends to...well, be brutal.
